Admission and Entry Requirements at Canadian Universities

In Canada, two types of institutions provide higher education: universities and colleges. After completing secondary school with an equivalent of a Canadian high school diploma (12 grades), international students may apply to both.
Applicants are entitled to consider only those colleges and universities that are included in the list of designated learning institutions.

Canadian universities generally provide two intakes each year, one in September and the other in January. Some universities also offer a third intake in May, July, or October. Applications procedure generally begins at least one year prior to the start of classes for the best chance at admission. It is important to remember that applications are processed as they arrive and up until a certain quota is reached; thus, applying early can significantly increase your chances of acceptance.

Work while studying in Canada

A study permit allows international full-time students to work on or off-campus, without requiring a work permit, offering them an opportunity to significantly reduce the cost of staying in the country. While during regular school semesters, international students may only be able to work part-time (up to 20 hours per week), winter and summer holidays provide an opportunity for full-time employment.
It is necessary to secure a Social Insurance Number (SIN), which grants the right to work and access government benefits and services, for international students. The minimum wage they can earn will vary depending on the particular province.
